John's Story
Life
Norma and I have been married for 44 years now and we have 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Our grandson Joey was starting linebacker on three Warren Central State Championship football teams; he also has won 11 State Track Meet medals and received a full scholarship to the University of Illinois. His twin brother Jimmy was a top 5 runner on Warren's first State Cross Country Championship; he also has excelled in track. Grandson Johnathon (Soph.) is a starter on the Harrison High(near Lafayette) Reserve basketball team and his younger brother Michael (6th grade) is a fierce competitor in whatever he does(football, basketball, soccer, track).We have had a great time following and cheering for these and our younger grandchildren. Since our retirement three years ago from our teaching careers we have taken up cruising with Holland America Cruise Lines. We started with a cruise and tour of Alaska;next, we flew to London and cruised the Baltic Sea - stopping at Oslo,Helsinki,St. Petersburg,etc.(an exciting, informative experience); then last April we cruised to Colombia, South America, the Panama Canal, Central America and Mexico. ell as several European ports. We have retired from mountain climbing after climbing about a dozen 14,000 foot peaks together and I climbed Mt. Rainier(3 times) in Washington, Mt. Shasta in northern California, and Peak Lenin in Tadjikistan in the Pamirs Mts. of Central Asia. We have followed the exploits of Ed Visturs over the years as he eventually climbed all of the 14 highest peaks in the world; he was my guide on Peak Lenin. We continue to enjoy skiing - just returning from a trip to Utah in January, and getting ready to go to Colorado in mid-February. During the warmer months we spend a lot time on the golf courses. Its been fun and we try to stay busy. Lately, we have spent February in Naples.On our last Mediterranean cruise we visited Ephesus and other ancient sites in western Turkey; my favorite experience was standing on the starting line in the ancient Olympic stadium at Olympia , Greece. Since then, we have cruised from San Diego out to and around the Hawaiian Islands and around the British Isles, touring St Andrews .We also got to play a round of golf in Scotland, the home of golf. The last two winters (2011,2012) we have enjoyed skiing and staying in a condo next to the lifts at Copper Mountain, Colorado.
